International Alert employs over 200 people of 30 nationalities both in our London offices and in the regions where we work. Most are full-time staff, but we also employ consultants, interns and volunteers.
POSITION : National Conflict Analyst Consultant
Duration: 6-8 working days across July - December 2016
Job Purpose
- This Terms of Reference is for six state-based national Conflict Advisor positions in Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu and Lagos with International. Alert (Alert) as a member of the consortium of the Nigeria Public Sector Accountability and Governance Programme (PSAG), administered by Palladium.
- Each of the six state-based national Conflict Advisors will be responsible for the timely and effective implementation of conflict analysis for the PSAG staff and partners in each of the focal states over the course of the six-month inception phase.
- In addition to adapting current conflict analysis materials to the state-based conflict context, the advisors will be responsible for implementing the training and monitoring of the teams during the inception phase of the programme in an iterative manner.
- Implementation will begin in July 2016 and will run through ti c31 December 2016, with the possibility of extension.
Duties and Responsibilities
Adapt International. Alert conflict anaLysis tooLs to state-based context:
- Adapt International Alert conflict analysis tools and conflict sensitivity training to local context (including language, cultural and gender-relational sensitivities, etc)
- Liaise and coordinate with Alert’s Senior Advisor on Conflict Sensitivity/PSAG Strategic Conflict Advisor on all adaptations of material to the context
- Coordinate the training design and execution with Alert’s Senior Advisor on Conflict Sensitivity/PSAG Strategic Conflict Advisor
Implement conflict analysis trainina for PSAG staff in state of implementation:
- Implement three-day conflict-sensitivity training for all PSAG staff and partners in state of implementation
- Administer pre-training baseline assessment and post-training evaluation forms
- Write training report with recommendations for ways forward to support PSAG staff and partners
Provide monthly half-day accompaniment and support to PSAG:
- Maintain frequent contact with PSAG staff and partners on a weekly basis
- Conduct half-day accompaniment with the PSAG staff and partners to update them an developments in the conflict context and assess any necessary adjustments to PSAG programme accordingly.
Contribute to wider oranisational goals within Alert Niagria Country,Strategy:
- Participate actively in the management processes of the Alert Nigeria team, including team meetings, sharing of information, context analysis, and strategy development
- Any other tasks as may be reasonably required
Management Responsibilities:
- The consultant will be line-managed and functionally supervised by Alert’s Senior Advisor on Conflict Sensitivity/PSAG Strategic Conflict Advisor
Requirements
Essential:
- Must be a Nigerian Resident
- Residence in one of the six states: Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Kadnua, Enugu or Lagos
- Knowledge of local languages in the working area IKanuri, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgeon, etci
- University degree in relevant field
- Three to five years of relevant working experience with international organizations or national community based organizations/non- profit organizations
- One to three years of training experience
- Knowledge of gender sensitive approaches
- Knowledge of peacebuilding approaches
- Previous experience of working in conflict-prone areas in Africa, West Africa and/or Nigeria
- Excellent working knowledge English
- Good coordination and communication skills
- Attitude for team work and good leadership skills
- Experience of partnership development and management
Desirable:
- Responsiveness, and ability to handle stressful situations and intense work periods
- A high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to interact successfully with a diverse range of people.
- Being non-judgmental and able to understand different perspectives
- Possessing a can-do approach, willing and able to improvise and adapt
Important Information:
- Each of the individuals must reside in the state they are applying for. Only local travel within the state will be covered under this programme; however, travel to Abuja at the inception and conclusion of the contract may be required.
Timeframe for Consultancy:
- International Alert seeks to contract six individuals for between six and eight working days in total
