POSITION : Director, Research and Knowledge Management
Position Description
- The Initiative for Equal Rights (“TIERs”) is hiring for the position of Director of Research and Knowledge Management (“DRKM”)
- The position includes conceptualizing and directing research and analysis around sexuality and gender,discriminatory laws and policies, community based research,and impact assessmentThe DRKM will design and lead empirical and qualitative research that will feed into policy , advocacy, programming and law review
- The position holder will be responsible for produce research reports, white papers, policy briefings and resource materials
Role and Responsibilities
- Developing social and policy research and social perception survey on LGBT rights and issues
- Research ing, documenting and analyzing the life and lived experience of LGBT persons at the community level and society at large
- Overseeing the research and knowledge management activities of the organization through a focus on a broad based portfolio of research topics
- Developing a database that contains detailed information and analysis of LGBT people’s reality from a social, economic and clinical perspective
- Designing and managing research projects effectively and efficiently, including tracking research projects for successful completion and influencing how research outcomes are used for programming, policy and advocacy
- Ensuring that research projects adhere to strict academic rigor and ethical standard
- Working with the communication department of TIERs to develop a communication strategy and implementation that is research led and communicated to relevant key stakeholders
- Supporting fundraising for research projects of the organization by identifying new grant opportunities
- Creating a conducive intellectual and research environment and to make TEIRs the Centre of excellence on LGBT research in Nigeria
- Working with local LGBT organizations to ensure issues faced within the community are reflected in research
- Engaging with the media and other stakeholders through speaking engagements, writing and publications such as op-eds and commentary and presenting at conferences locally and internationally
- Performing other duties that may be assigned by direct supervisor
Qualification and Experience
- A degree in the Social Sciences or relevant discipline
- A Masters-level degree would be an added advantage
- Good understanding of sexuality and gender related issues
- Three-Five years’prior work experience in similar field Work experience in non-profit entity is an additional advantage
- Excellent writing skills with a proven track record of research and publication
- Demonstrate past record of peer-reviewed publication or similar research output
- Networking skills and managing complex situations are desirable skill
- Ability to deliver task with minimal supervision
- Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to equality and social inclusion is mandatory
- Understanding of issues affecting members of the LGBT community including but not limited to homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism
POSITION : Director, Sexual Health and Well being
Position Description
- The Initiative for Equal Rights (“TIERs”) is hiring for the position of a Director Sexual Health and Wellbeing (“DSHW”)
- The position holder will design programs and provide strategic direction toward sexual, social and mental health programs specific to LGBT persons in Nigeria.
- The person will also be responsible for leading the program team and giving technical assistance on all programs implemented within the department
- The DSHW will be responsible for liaising with donors on emerging issues identified within programming and best possible approach to address them while ensuring quality programming and service delivery to the community.
Role and Responsibilities
- Designing, implementing and supporting sexual health and wellbeing programs targeting LGBT persons
- Designing, delivering,evaluating and monitoring training to professionals on heath issues affecting LGBT people
- Designing, delivering, evaluating and monitoring a range of health and wellbeing initiatives for LGBT people including,education sessions, one to one support, social and peer support and advocacy
- Maintaining a working knowledge of local and national guidance, policy and research relating to sexual health
- Identifying and maintaining community resources useful in implementing program activities
- Supervising the implementation of program activities and providing technical guidance to staff, other agencies and service providers as necessary to ensure quality program implementation
- Researching HIV/AIDS information and preparing bulletins, periodic reports, and educational materials
- Performing various technical tasks related to the HIV/AIDS program such as conducting educational presentations, conducting statistical surveys, liaising with relevant state officials,and developing specific health education plans
- Identifying and utilizing the linkages between sexual health, human rightsand wellbeing
- Planning and/or participating in workshops, forums, and discussions to highlight the emerging issues at the community level
- Promoting the health and wellbeing services of LGBT persons to relevant stakeholders and ensuring wider support services that enables appropriateuptake of services
- Ensuringaccessibility of safer sex packs throughout a range of venues
- Developing new and innovative sexual health services based on identified needs and emerging issues
- Performing other duties that might be assigned by direct supervisors
Qualification and Experience
- A Degree in Public Health or Social Science or relevant discipline.
- A Masters-level Degree would be an advantage.

POSITION : Director, Human Rights and Advocacy
Position Description
- The Initiative for Equal Rights (“TIERs”) is hiring for the position of a Director of Human Rights and Advocacy(“DHRA”) The position holder will design programs and provide strategic direction toward programs that address the stigma, discrimination
- and violence experienced by LGBT persons in Nigeria
- The DHRA will also engage policymakers and relevant stakeholders in ensuring issues of LGBT rights are
- prioritized by CSOs and policy makers
- The person will also be responsible for leading the program team and giving technical assistance on all programs within the
- department and ensuring that initiative implemented reflects the priorities of advocacy and human rights needs of LGBT persons
Role and Responsibilities
- Developing advocacy priorities and strategies, identifying advocacy opportunities, and undertaking advocacy targeting governments, intergovernmental organizations, and the general public
- Coordinating and providing training and other capacity building activities to human rights defenders/activists, nascent LGBT organizations both in Nigeria and within the West Africa sub-region
- Providing strategic direction, technical assistance and networking support to human rights defenders/activists and networking with mainstream human rights CSOs
- Undertaking and working closely with the research and knowledge management team to research and analyze, prepare reports and publications focusing on SOGIE based issues and rights
- When necessary, serve as spokesperson for TIERs, including through the preparation of statements, media releases and op-eds
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with key partners including NGOs, governments, intergovernmental organizations, human rights bodies and experts, journalists and funders
- Working closely with international, regional, national and local civil society organizations and activists through formal and informal coalitions
- Monitoring key developments in relation to human rights violations experience by LGBTI persons, and preparing and publishing annual reports highlighting human rights violations based on SOGIE
- Contributing to the writing, editing and publication of TIERs publications, including papers, shadow reports and other related publications
- Working closely with other team members to prepare and submit funding proposals that can support the advancement of the work of the department
- Assisting with the planning, and preparation of TIERs public advocacy events
- Supervising and managing other direct support staff and other personnel where appropriate
- Performing other duties that might be assigned by direct supervisors
Qualification and Experience
- A degree in Law, International Relations, the Social Sciences or related discipline
- A Masters-level degree would be an advantage
- At least three-five year’s previous professional experience working on human rights laws, policies and institutions preferably with NGOs
- Experience in designing and implementing successful human rights programs, campaigns and initiatives
- A strong commitment to, and passion for, the principles and practice of equality, social inclusion and human rights
- Ability to think and act quickly, creatively and strategically under pressure
- Excellent writing skills with a proven ability in interpersonal and communication skills
- Good with networking and managing complex situation
- Ability to deliver task with minimal supervision
- Understanding of issues affecting members of the LGBT community in Nigeria and abroad including,but not limited to,homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism
