POSITION : Group Finance Controller
Description
You are expected to lead and be accountable for establishing and running the following functions at a group level: financial reporting (management & statutory, incl. filings and audit), budgeting, treasury, HR and KPI tracking.
Responsibilities
Financial Management and Control:
- Responsible for the management of the treasury function and payroll.
- Management and development of the accounting function designed to monitor and control all aspects of the business; progressing innovative systems development which delivers incisive performance indicators, management information and provides the competitive advantage to the group.
- Construct and monitor reliable control and fraud prevention systems
- Responsible for preparing monthly reports to the management committee.
- Prepares and complete interim and end of the year statutory accounts, including consolidation of the Nigerian subsidiary of the U.S parent and Ops Co..
- Responsible for maintaining appropriate insurance coverage.
Taxation:
- Compliance with all Nigerian and U.S tax authority requirements.
- Liaison with external auditors, taxation advisers, solicitors and other professional advisers.
- Ensures the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
Budgeting and Forecast:
- Responsible for the implementation and management of group budgeting cycle.
- Preparation of budgets, forecasts and business plans and continued
- Monitoring & review of performance against them to enable robust reporting of variances to the Board and third party stakeholders.
Information Technology:
- To take a lead role in the implementation of the Upgraded Sage accounting system.
- Working closely with IT to ensure users have access to the key components of the accounting system, receive adequate training and have the essential reports readily available to facilitate decision making and problem-solving.
Others:
- Be the custodian of the group’s creditworthiness and credit rating.
- Negotiate with all relevant government bodies, company unions and regulatory entities if and when required.
- Ensure record keeping meets the requirements of the auditors and government agencies.
- Maintains relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations.
- Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts; maintain the group’s banking relationship.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A Master's degree in Accounting or Business Administration, or equivalent discipline from a reputable institution with good grades.
- Be a qualified accountant with 5-10 years of PQE.
- Spinal-cord-level understanding of generally accepted accounting principles & IFRS - reads financial statements with utter facility
- Demonstrated high energy and persistence in the pursuit of objectives - known for a resourceful, entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving, a "closer"
- Must be results-oriented, someone who conveys a sense of urgency and will continually press for closure and timely accomplishment of objectives
- Possess a high standard of integrity, morals and business ethics; intuitive grasp of good corporate governance principles
- Well-honed ability to quickly spot and eliminate fraudulent practices
- Exceptional intellect - needs to be a fast and accurate thinker in order to be able to gain the respect and trust of the other senior management team members
- High EQ and intuitive understanding of key executive personality traits and teamwork dynamics in order to be able to head-hunt, recruit, retain and excite the necessary talent
- Steady hand who will not bet the farm, and who errs on the side of long-term stability
- Diplomatic & low-ego but tough management style
- Have previously held the position of a Controller or equivalent.
- Have a thorough understanding of a comprehensive tool box operational and financial performance methods and processes, preferably in capital intensive industries.
- Excellent computer skills - a spreadsheet wizard with user experience on more than one ERP system as well as with more than one accounting system
- Previous experience in running or overseeing an HR function desirable
- Experience in dealing with unions and regulators
- Experience in dealing with unions and regulators
- Experience gained in a high-volume B2C business with complex logistics and several customer touch points considered particularly relevant and valuable
- Demonstrated ability to build, organize, motivate and lead a high-performance team is crucial
- Exceptional intellect - needs to be a fast and accurate thinker in order to be able to gain the respect and trust of the other senior management team members
- High EQ and intuitive understanding of key executive personality traits and teamwork dynamics in order to be able to head-hunt, recruit, retain and excite the necessary talent
- Exceptional numeracy and logical reasoning skills - comfortable with “management by numbers”
- Possess a high standard of integrity, morals and business ethics
- Excellent critical thinking and decision making skills; ability to focus and choose the best alternative even when all options are bad
Desire Outcome:
- Over a period of 6 months, establish robust control, treasury and accounting functions for the group, consisting of two U.S. companies and one Nigerian company (the Nigerian company is the main operating company).
- Over a period of 6 months, innovate, design and implement a state-of-the-art performance measurement (KPI) system for the whole group.
- Take immediate and full ownership of the group budgeting function.
- Take immediate and full responsibility for all statutory filings in Nigeria and the U.S, including audits and maintaining an appropriate regulatory status.
